Welcome from the Scientific Director

Welcome to the website of the Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Area (CIBERNED).

The Neurodegenerative Diseases Area of CIBER (CIBERNED) is dedicated to combating neurodegenerative diseases by promoting excellent research and its safe translation into clinical practice.

Neurodegenerative diseases are caused by a multifactorial process and a progressive degeneration that leads to neuronal death, affecting various cell populations in the central and/or peripheral nervous system. This neuronal loss results in a deterioration of functions affecting cognition, behavior, global or partial motor skills, sensory capacity, or, often, a combination of these abilities. At CIBERNED, we study the most prevalent diseases within this group, such as Alzheimer's disease and other degenerative dementias (such as Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementias, among others), Parkinson's disease, and other degenerative conditions associated with movement disorders such as Huntington's chorea, ataxias, and genetically inherited spastic paraparesis. We also focus on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular disorders like peripheral neuropathies, myasthenia, or muscular dystrophies. Lastly, as an example of the complex relationship between neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, we study multiple sclerosis and other inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system. In all these cases, our approach is directed toward Precision Medicine, with a special interest in the search for biomarkers and new therapeutic targets to support Personalized Medicine approaches.

To achieve our goals, we collaborate with 56 research groups, predominantly composed of clinical and basic researchers, affiliated with research institutes linked to hospitals in the National Health System, as well as universities and excellent research centers distributed throughout Spain

CIBERNED is an open center for collaboration and is committed to scientific dissemination. I encourage you to follow the progress of our research through the news articles available on the website.

Warm regards,

Adolfo López de Munain
