Research outline  

The benefits of modern medicine has caused an impressive increase in the average age of the population in developed countries. However, this scenario has allowed an increase in several diseases linked to ageing such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Research on AD was usually focused on the loss of neuronal populations but recently it has been described that an impairment in synaptic activity and the beginning of cognitive impairments seems to precede the neuronal death observed in Alzheimer disease. In this context we are interested in the study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that are responsible for the early cognitive impairment observed in AD. In particular, we are focusing our efforts in the understanding the effect of ß-amyloid in synaptic GluA receptors (glutamate AMPA receptors) function and in the regulation of gene expression programs related to the cognitive deficits observed in early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
